My research group, based in RCSI Bahrain studies polymorphic alterations to genes associated with conveying resistance to or protecting the body from the effects of insulin. These genes encode for cytokines termed adipokines, that are predominantly released from adipose tissue. Most of these adipokines are released in increasing amounts with increasing visceral adiposity, with the association of type 2 Diabetes mellitus and obesity termed Diabesity.
