Anastasios Markopoulos, DMD, MS, PhD was a professor in the dept. of Oral Medicine/Oral Pathology in the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Pathology at the Aristotle University School of Dentistry, Thessaloniki, Greece. He also served as Chair of the Section of dept. of Oral Medicine/Oral Pathology. He retired from this position in November 2014. Dr. Markopoulos received his DMD, in 1977 from the School of Dentistry, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece. In 1978 he attended an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic in the public General Hospital in Saarbruecken, Germany. From 1978-1980 he served as a general dentist in the Greek Airforce. In 1981, he was appointed as an Instructor in the Oral Medicine/Oral Pathology Department at Aristotle University, School of Dentistry. In 1986 he obtained his PhD from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 1987 he was appointed as a lecturer of Oral Medicine/Oral pathology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 1989 he worked as a visiting Immunologist at UCLA School of Dentistry, USA. In 1991 he obtained a Master of Science degree in Oral Biology from UCLA. In 1991 he was promoted to Assistant Professor, in 1991 to Associate Professor and in 2010 to Professor in Aristotle University. From 2010 till 2014 he was Professor and Chair, dept. of Oral Medicine/Oral Pathology. From 2003-2014 he was Coordinator of the Graduate Program of Oral Medicine/Oral Pathology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Dr. Markopoulos’s clinical interests include oral diagnosis, oral medicine, and oral oncology. Dr. Markopoulos has published more than 140 articles related to Oral Medicine/Oral Pathology in Greek and International Journals. He has also published two books; the first is titled: Maxillofacial manifestations of endocrine diseases and the second is an online Handbook of Oral Physiology and Oral Biology. He has performed more than 190 oral presentations and lectures in Greece, Europe and USA. He has also mentored several undergraduate and graduate students for their research projects. Dr.Markopoulos is honorary member of the Hellenic Society of Oral Medicine and Pathology. He is also member of American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and member of International Association of Oral Pathology.
